Acne can occur to all ages, but it affects primarily teens and young adults. If left untreated, the problem will persist when the person reaches adulthood. 1 in every 5 adults suffers from acne problems. In order to stop your acne problem, you need to know how it all started. Here are some common causes of acne. Cause #1: Hormones. During puberty, our body produces hormones called androgens. They are male hormones that are present in both men & women. Androgens are responsible for the growth of armpit and pubic hair, and boys develop facial hair and deeper voices. In addition, androgens enlarge the sebaceous glands in our skin, which causes these glands to increase sebum production. Cause #2: Too much sebum production. Dead skin cells and sebum clog up your pores, which in turn leads to acne, or worsen your acne condition. This can be easily solved by using a soap-free cleanser. Wash your face twice a day, but not too often as it might lead to skin dryness, which results in more sebum being produced. Cause #3: Bacteria. This is a common cause of acne because the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes multiplies quickly when your pores are clogged. It causes redness and inflammation of the skin. Cause #4: Passed down from generation to generation. Acne does run in some families, but the real cause is still not known. More research has to be done to confirm this cause. Cause #5: Unhealthy lifestyle. Lack of sleep, poor eating habits, smoking and stress may also lead to pimple breakouts because our body is not able to renew and recover as quickly as before. More research needs to be done to confirm this cause.
