Buying Manuka Honey in the U.S.

Author: Frank Buonanotte
Source: articlerich.com

Manuka Honey is becoming a well-recognized health remedy in the U.S. market and all over the world. In the quiet, pollution-free countryside of New Zealand, hardworking honeybees gather nectar from a very special flower that grows on a native bush called the Manuka Tea Tree (also known as Leptospermum scoparium). It is this nectar that contains molecules that many believe holds the key to healing many different illnesses. Most recently, Manuka Honey has been gaining worldwide recognition for its ability to eradicate the MRSA bacterium that is responsible for causing life threatening Staph infections that are otherwise impervious to antibiotics. The resilient superbugs associated with MRSA are no match for the potent antibacterial properties of Manuka Honey.

Manuka Honey gets its antibacterial properties from 4 main components. It’s osmolarity in effect dehydrates infectious microorganisms by drawing moisture out of bacterial cells. Manuka Honey is also very acidic with pH levels not conducive for bacterial growth. Like other types of honey, Manuka Honey also contains low levels of hydrogen peroxide which is a known antiseptic. What makes Manuka Honey different than other types of honey are the plant-derived floral components that are present, such as methylglyoxal and a not yet recognized compound that has become known as the Unique Manuka Factor or UMF. These floral nectar components contribute greatly to its antibacterial activity.

In addition to its powerful antibacterial properties, Manuka Honey is also considered to be antimicrobial, anti-fungal, antiviral and anti-parasitic. Since most health conditions are cause by some sort of bacteria, virus, fungus or parasite, Manuka Honey is being recognized as a viable treatment option for many conditions that don’t respond well to traditional forms of medication. When taken orally, Manuka Honey is effective in treating sore throats, strep throat, stomach aches, stomach ulcers, acid reflux disease, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastro-intestinal disorders, cold and flu symptoms, etc. When used topically on the skin, Manuka Honey is effective in treating infected wounds, burns, acne, eczema, ringworm and a variety of other conditions.

Since its origin is New Zealand, Manuka Honey can be somewhat hard to come by. Shipping costs from New Zealand to the U.S. can sometimes exceed the amount of the honey itself. However, now U.S. consumers can purchase Honeymark brand Manuka Honey more conveniently. Honeymark’s Manuka Honey is certified by the Active Manuka Honey Association in New Zealand to be active UMF 16+ which is a potent medical-grade honey. Consumers should beware of other companies that sell less potent Manuka Honey for a discounted price. Manuka Honey that is not bioactive does not contain enough antimicrobial properties necessary for medicinal use. Honeymark assures their customers that their Manuka Honey is of medical grade.

Honeymark International is known for manufacturing quality skin care products that contain active Manuka Honey as a natural healing agent. Honeymark’s skin care products are not sticky and offer the same benefits of Manuka Honey without the sticky mess. When used for internal purposes, Manuka Honey usually outperforms most medicines, with of course, a much more pleasant flavor. If you’re having difficulty getting your children to take medicine when they’re sick, Manuka Honey may be an easier choice. And Manuka Honey is a natural product, it has also been found to have no known side effects.

“Manuka Honey has become an extremely important resource and valuable commodity,” says Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International. “As word continues to spread about the healing ability of this premium honey, it will become viewed more as a natural treatment alternative to pharmaceutical medication.” Honeymark plans to continue to expand its range of Manuka honey-based products to include a Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Lip Balm, Foaming Cleanser and Moisturizer. Customers can expect to see these new products later this year.

Carrot Juice – A Delicious and Nutritious Drink

Author: Adrian Broadby
Source: ezinearticles.com

One of the very best ways of obtaining a concentration of nutrients is to drink vegetable and fruit juices, and one of the most delicious and nutritious and versatile of these juices is carrot juice, which contains a range of nutrients including vitamins B, C, D, E, K and beta carotene and the minerals magnesium, potassium, chlorine, sulphur, iron, calcium, chromium, phosphorus, sodium, silica and iodine.

Drinking carrot juice is beneficial in many ways. As may be expected, it has a beneficial effect on the health of the eyes and is very good for problems related to the skin. It is a liver cleanser and has an anti-inflammatory effect upon the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract and in the intestines, and as such has a healing effect upon ulcers. Small quantities can be mixed with other juices to provide a benefit to diabetics and to people suffering from Syndrome X. This is because it contains an insulin-like compound. It is a good juice to be taken during pregnancy and during breast feeding. It is also a very good drink to be given to children as they grow into adulthood.

The sweet juice of the carrot combines extremely well with many other vegetable and fruit juices to make a tasty and nutritious drink. In combination with various other juices, carrot juice is used as an effective treatment for countless medical conditions, ranging from acne to weight loss. It is an extremely good source of pro-vitamin A, which is converted by the body to vitamin A. Calcium and magnesium in carrot juice helps in the strengthening of teeth and bones, and protein and minerals in the juice are very good for the hair, skin and nails. Fresh carrot juice will stimulate your digestive system and will have a gentle diuretic effect. If used over time, it will have a cleansing effect upon the liver, which has implications for the overall health of the body. Excess fat and bile is eliminated, having a beneficial effect upon the level of cholesterol in the body.

It has been said that you can overdose on vitamin A by drinking too much carrot juice, but it only contains pro-vitamin A which you cannot overdose on at all, and the body only converts pro-vitamin A to Vitamin A as it is required. If you drink very large quantities of carrot juice then you may develop carotenosis, or orange coloured skin, but this side effect is harmless and temporary. If an infant is given carrot juice with milk the absorption of carotene is significantly increased and gives the child an ideal and safe source of vitamin A. When looking for carrots to put through the juicer, look for ones that have a good colour, as they will contain more nutrients.

If used regularly, carrot juice will become a daily treat that not only tastes delicious, but has wonderful health benefits as well.

The Best Way to Prevent Wrinkles – Simple, Easy Advice

Author: Dan Ho
Source: ezinearticles.com

Our skin ages just like the rest of our body. Unfortunately for many of us, it tells our secrets from years past. One look at a 40-year-old’s face and you can tell if she or he spent their teen years basking in the sun slathered in cooking oil; if he’s spent most of his adult life smoking cigarettes; and even if the person you’re looking at eats properly.

Those lines creasing our face tells more than our age – it tells those around us the kind of life we’ve led and the things we’ve done to damage our skin.

Wrinkles don’t have to be an inevitable part of growing older. They can be prevented with a little knowledge, and a lot of care. The key is knowing what our skin needs at each phase of our lives, and giving it just what it craves!

But first, we have to understand how our skin ages (and wrinkles). The skin ages in one of two ways:

1. chronologically
2. environmentally

The chronological aging of our skin has to do with our genes. Some people are just luckier than others and have a good gene pool that allows them to mistreat their skin with little effect. These are the people who look younger than their years without doing much of anything to prevent wrinkles.

Of course, even someone with more youthful genes can have a face etched with wrinkles if their environmental age goes against their chronological one.

Your environmental or photo-age is a snapshot of how you’ve treated your skin over the years. Neglect your skin for too long and it’ll begin to show. Fail to give your skin the vitamins and other nutrients it needs to rejuvenate itself, spend too much time in the damaging sun, smoke cigarettes, or fail to relax enough, and even your genes won’t be able to save you from wrinkling.

The good news is: staying away from these skin dangers can indeed help you prevent wrinkles in the first place.

So what’s the answer? Learning to take care of your skin at every age will indeed prevent wrinkles when you are older. What’s the best course of action? Follow these simple rules for every decade:

Preventing Wrinkles in Your 20’s

Few people in their twenties think about preventing wrinkles, but this is the best time to start! Believe it or not, 70 percent of the sun damage your skin will undergo happens before you reach 25. Astounding! To prevent wrinkles later, be sure to follow these simple tips now:

1. Stay out of the sun when possible, and when you can’t be sure to wear protective clothing, sunglasses and a high SPF sunscreen whenever in the sun.
2. Avoid harsh skin care products containing chemicals, parabens and other synthetic ingredients.
3. Never scrub your skin. Pat it dry.
4. Never use hot water on your skin. It’ll dry it out
5. Eat a well-balanced diet
6. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes. They all have a dehydrating effect on the skin and strip it of essential nutrients.

Preventing Wrinkles in Your 30’s

To prevent wrinkles in your 30’s continue following the tips above, plus add these:

1. Reduce your stress levels. Learn to relax more.
2. Smile more. It helps to exercise the facial muscles and keep them taut
3. Moisturize. You can’t get enough hydrating moisture in your skin at this age (and beyond).
4. Don’t pull at your skin when either applying makeup or wiping it off (especially around the eyes).
5. Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of plain water.

Preventing Wrinkles in Your 40’s

As hormones begin to fluctuate (especially in women), the skin can begin to show change. Oily skin suddenly becomes dry, acne reappears, saggy cheeks replace plumped healthier looking ones and more. The best things you can do to prevent wrinkles in your 40’s include:

1. Use a daily sunscreen that contains a moisturizer
2. Use an antioxidant moisturizer at night.
3. Indulge in a hydrating facial steam once a week
4. Try a moisturizing mask several times a week to plump up the skin.
5. Use an alpha or beta hydroxyl treatment periodically to improve skin texture and lesson the effects of sun damage.

Preventing Wrinkles in Your 50’s and Beyond

As a woman enters her 50’s her body begins to make less estrogen, an important ingredient to helping the skin make the collagen it need to remain smooth and radiant. One of the best ways to tackle this aging issue it to dry brush your skin regularly. It’ll help stimulate epidermal growth and get rid of dead surface cells. Here are some other tips for preventing wrinkles as you enter the latter years of your life:

1. Moisturize daily
2. Use only mild milk-based cleansers
3. Spritz your face with hydrosol regularly
4. Add one tablespoon of flaxseed or cod liver oil to your daily diet
5. Always wear a hat when outdoors
6. Never leave the house without first applying sunscreen
7. Eat well.
8. Exercise regularly
9. Use a non-abrasive exfoliating mask weekly

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to prevent wrinkles as you age, if you know how to properly take care of your skin.

Natural Rosacea Products & Rosacea Medications : The Common Thread

Author: Danna Schneider
Source: isnare.com

If you are one of the thousands of men and women suffering from the skin discorder rosacea or acne rosacea, you may already be familiar with the standard dermatologist-prescribed courses of action and medications.

What many people don’t know, is there are actually non-prescription, natural rosacea products that are just as effective, if not more effective, than prescription rosacea medications and topical rosacea gels and ointments.

First, let’s look at the common ingredients in pharmaceutical rosacea medications. Two popular topical prescription drugs for rosacea are Metronidazole and Azelic Acid.

As an oral medication for rosacea, physicians may utilize a variety of medications, mostly antibiotic in nature, to help control rosace by controlling severe facial flushing and swelling. Sometimes in severe cases, even cardiovascular medications are used to help control the facial flushing.

Because of the higher risk of negative reactions associated with the long term use of oral antibiotics, topical therapy is usually the preferred long term treatment method. There is also the danger of antibiotic resistence becoming a problem for people who are treated long term with anitbiotics.

Topically applied rosacea medications, especially those of a natural origin, are becoming more and more popular, since there is no risk of them becoming ineffective over a period of time, as there may be with man-made topical rosacea solutions.

In addition to topical rosacea gels, creams, and sprays, a complete skincare regimen including face wash and moisturizer should also be employed as a preventive measure for rosacea.

People with rosacea have skin that requires intense and very specific care, every day, from cleanser to makeup. It is important that anything that comes into contact with the face does not have any skin-aggravating properties, but rather possesses skin-calming and anti-redness peoperties. There are natural rosacea skincare systems that will do just that, and before you know it, you will be “back in the clear”.

Manuka Honey An Effective Natural Antibacterial Agent

Author: Robert Scheer
Source: articledashboard.com

Given the increasing popularity of organic foods and the rising concern about products genetically modified organisms, it is not surprising to see a line of skin care products created with totally natural ingredients. Such is the case of the Manuka products from Manu Nutraceuticals in New Zealand. Their primary active ingredient comes from the New Zealand Tea Tree (Leptospermum scoparium) a bush known locally as the Manuka plant.

The aboriginal Maori people of New Zealand, who have lived in the area for perhaps 1000 years, recognized that the Manuka tea tree plant could be used for its therapeutic and healing properties. For example, they used the leaves and back of the Manuka bush to treat colds, fever, digestive ailments, burns and other wounds.

Although early settlers in New Zealand also appreciated that many of their local plants had useful medicinal properties, it was not until the 1980s when scientists started studying the properties of the essential oil of the Manuka plant. They discovered it was remarkably effective as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. In a separate study, a professor of biochemistry in New Zealand was doing a study on whether local honey could be utilized for antimicrobial properties. He discovered that honey collected from the flowers of the Manuka bush had antibacterial properties significantly different from other kinds of honey. It was particularly effective against bacteria that were resistant to many other antibiotics.

This compound, which occurs in some but not all kinds of Manuka honey, has been given the name of the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). There have not been any strains of harmful bacteria found that were able to resist the antibacterial power of UMF Manuka honey. For this reason, UMF Manuka honey is now being used for such medical applications as treating infected wounds and against skin ulcers. It is also being taken for upset stomachs, sore throats, stimulation of the immune system and assisting in the prevention of dehydration.

Skin care products made with Manuka oil are being used to treat such disorders as acne, eczema, herpes, athlete’s foot, yeast infection, scabies, insect stings, nail fungus, strep throat, candida and psoriasis. There are also soaps, massage oils and skin cleansers and toners that are made with the New Zealand Manuka tree oils and Manuka honey.

It seems ironic to many observers that, in today’s age of high technology, scientific research, and the creation of new products out of artificial ingredients, that simple, natural organic ingredients such as Manuka tea tree oil and the honey made from the flowers of the Manuka bush have proven to be some of the most powerful and effective medicinal treatments against health and wellness disorders that have plagued mankind since earliest times.

Beauty Diary – Get the Connection?

Author: Kristin Adams
Source: articlecity.com

Our skin is affected not only by the foods which we eat, but also by the things which it absorbs. This means that whatever you put onto your skin could potentially have a direct effect on its health and appearance. When looking at the cosmetic and skin care products which you use, it may surprise you to know that most of them could be potentially causing your skin problems instead of helping them.

Identifying the Cause of the Problem If you are struggling to find the cause of your skin problem then try writing down everything that you use on your body and hair during your daily routine. Note when you started using each product. Is it an old favorite you have used for the last 15 years, or is it a brand new product you just picked up? Have there been any other changes to your beauty routine? If there have been then it is more than likely that the change in products has led to the problems with your skin. Writing a beauty diary will help you narrow down the potential offenders.

A figure which may surprise you is that most women tend to use around 12 personal care products a day. This could be anything from soap to shower gel, deodorant, make-up and even moisturizers, cleanser and toner. Each one of these products has on average 15-30 potentially harmful ingredients.

By being your own personal beauty investigator, you can eliminate the product from your beauty routine that could be causing the trouble. If you are having a reaction, allergic or otherwise, it most likely is connected to a new product introduced into your routine. On occasion though, old favorites can start to cause irritation after prolonged use, so don’t rule them out. Once you have a date that your skin issue began, first take a hard look at the products you have used after that date.

At this point you should:

1. Look at the remaining products in question and determine if they come in contact with the area of your body with which you have issues. For example, if you have acne on your forehead, remember that not only pertains to your cosmetics but also your hair and shampoo which come in contact with this area and must be considered.

2. Read the ingredient labels of the identified new products. If you notice a trend in the ingredients of all your products you could be allergic to one or many of these repeating ingredients.

3. Remove one or all of the isolated products from your routine. If you must use a similar product make sure that it is made of different ingredients. If you are not using a natural product already try an all-natural alternative. Read the ingredient labels to confirm that it is truly natural. These natural alternatives generally contain less ingredients and are free of many irritating chemicals found in traditional products. If you are already using a natural product that you would like to eliminate make sure you replace it with an entirely different formula.

4. Keep the suspect products out of your beauty routine for at least 3-4 months.

5. Do your homework. A quick google search for ’safe cosmetics’ or ‘cosmetic database’ will give you detailed information about the general safety of thousands of products you may be using. Make sure your products fall within the ‘green’ range for safety in the online safe cosmetics databases.

6. During this time note any changes to your issue and overall health.

7. By writing down the cosmetics you use and the ingredients in them you will then be able to log on to safe cosmetic databases and determine the safety rating for that particular product.

Cutting Out the Risk of Harming Your Skin There are over 10,500 ingredients used in cosmetics and skin care products. Of those only 11% have ever been tested for safety. The FDA does not require testing of cosmetic and beauty care products. With this huge knowledge gap about the ingredients in our beauty products it is often better to stick to what is known and tested to be safe. If you are interested in eliminating potential unknowns from your routine try natural alternatives to your drug-store or department store brands. There are lots of options available both online and in your local health food store.

Start that beauty diary and learn more about your own beauty habits! You may see a connection between your skin problems and the product you use.

Does Makeup Make You Age Faster?

Author: Jerzy George
Source: isnare.com

The relationship between makeup and aging tends to be a bit of a grey area. Often, many questions arise concerning this topic, though there arenÂ’t a lot substantial answers. Most of the debates revolving around makeup and aging donÂ’t seem to have any factual basis. This ambiguity has a lot to do with what aging itself actually means.

Aging occurs due to a lack of collagen and elastin. These two things help to hold skin together while ensuring that it is smooth, tight, strong and supple. Collagen and elastin also prevent the skin from loosening by maintaining the skin structure. This process prevents wrinkles and sagging from occurring.

The reason why so many different skin experts negatively equate makeup with aging is solely based upon the ingredients that makeup is composed of. There have been allegations that some of the ingredients inside certain makeup products contain toxins, which might negatively affect collagen and hence make the aging process faster.

Some types of makeup can clog pores causing a large amount of build-up. This build-up leads to acne and many other skin conditions. However, most of the beauty products on the market these days are non-comedogenic, which means that shouldnÂ’t block your pores. Still, it is important to read all labels, understand all ingredients, and choose only those products that are all-natural.

Some experts also believe that makeup effectively blocks the sun. These claims are based on the premise that exposure to the sun (at least 15 minutes) is required in order to maintain healthy skin. While there is some truth behind the assumption that Vitamin D is necessary for the skin (the sun is an excellent source of Vitamin D), it has also been proven that more than 15 minutes of sun exposure can lead to cancer.

There have also been a lot of allegations that anti-aging cosmetic products pose threats to the skin. Claims have been made that these anti aging skin care products actually increase the rate of aging because of the toxic ingredients present in them. While this might be true of some products that are composed of chemicals, natural products do not contain any harmful ingredients.

Most of the arguments revolving around aging, anti aging and makeup are based on assumption-related risks. The important thing to remember is to wash your face with a high-quality product (http://collagenelife.mionegroup.com) daily in order to avoid any clogged pores or build-up. Of course, this process is only as good as the cleansers that you choose, so make sure to select quality products.

Presently, there is no conclusive evidence that points towards makeup as the sole cause of making skin age faster. Since there is no concrete evidence either way, it is suggested that you look towards natural solutions for various skin care requirements.

Diabetes Mellitus in Children

Author: Brenda Williams
Source: ezinearticles.com

Our bodies depend on glucose for energy. In order for the body to utilize the glucose, the cells of the body have to extract it from the blood. To do this they need a hormone known as insulin. Insulin is produced in the pancreas. If the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin or if the cells of the body do not respond correctly to the insulin that is produced the level of glucose in the blood will increase because the glucose is not being absorbed by the body’s cells. The result is a disease called diabetes mellitus or more commonly diabetes.

The normal glucose level in the blood is from 65 to 120 milligrams per deciliter or (mg/dL). Under normal circumstances this balance is maintained in spite of a surge of sugar following eating a meal or snack or a few hours without sugar when one doesn’t eat, for example, at night while sleeping. However, when insulin is not produced or utilized normally, the balance is disrupted and glucose levels either rise too high or fall too low. There are three types of diabetes mellitus: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.

The form of diabetes that is common to children is Type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes usually affects adults over forty years of age although it can develop in children and this is now happening more often than in the past. Gestational diabetes is restricted to pregnant women. Type 1 diabetes is classified as an auto-immune disease. Because the immune system attacks the insulin producing cells of the pancreas, the body has less insulin available than is required. Type 1 may be genetic or it can be the result of a virus. Scientists are not sure about this. Both boys and girls are equally susceptible to Type 1 diabetes.

Scientists also do not understand why Type 2 diabetes is suddenly starting to affect children. However, they believe that this may be due to overweight and inactivity. Symptoms of diabetes in children include excessive thirst and urination, weight loss or failure to gain weight, fatigue and large appetite. Since treatment can be a lifetime procedure, it is important that parents and children work together to manage the diabetes. The child must learn the importance of checking and maintaining proper blood sugar levels. If insulin injections are required, the child must learn how to do this and must know the schedule for the injections.

Maintaining a proper diet is extremely important and this may be difficult with children. Parents can control what the child eats at home but away from home and in school is a different matter. Most young children are fond of sugar snacks such as candy and these need to be avoided. However, diabetic children can have sugarless candy. Diabetic children also need to eat on a regular schedule of meals interspersed with healthy snacks. In addition, they must follow a regular exercise program. Teachers and school administrators should always be advised if a child is diabetic and they need to be informed of medication schedules and diet.
